Selected by NYCEDC in 2015 after an extensive community-driven process, BFC Partners took on the redevelopment of the century-old Bedford Union Armory — a nearly full city block that had sat vacant for years. The iconic drill hall was transformed into the Major R. Owens Health and Wellness Community Center, New York City's first and largest comprehensive center offering medical, recreational, and emotional wellness services at affordable rates for the Brooklyn community.
Adjacent to the community center, two new residential buildings at 1101 and 1089 President Street deliver 415 homes — 250 of them affordable for households earning between 30% and 60% of area median income. The project also includes office space for nonprofit organizations and a 118-car parking facility. Completed in 2023, Bedford Union Armory is a model for how a community's long-held vision becomes reality.
