A former Crown Heights armory will soon be home to private townhouses, market-rate apartments and affordable housing.
The project, at the site of the former Bedford-Union Armory, is being developed by Brooklyn-based BFC Partners and Slate Property Group, along with the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Bedford Courts LLC, representatives announced on Wednesday.
The 500,000-square-foot, mixed-use project will feature 12 private townhouses, as well as a new apartment building with market-rate and affordable units, DNAinfo reported.The armory’s main building will also feature a recreation center. The developers will operate under a 99-year lease on most of the property, but the city is planning to sell a portion of the property along President Street — the future home of the townhouses — to the developers, the website reported. Representatives for Slate and BFC could not immediately be reached for further information.
The armory, which was built in 1903, was initially under state control, but the city acquired the property in 2013. In November of that year, the city put out a call for developers to either buy or lease the armory to build a community center. [DNAinfo] — Kathryn Brenzel
